Summer is a time to relax and play in the sun. Unfortunately, the sun and a person’s hair do not always agree. Special hair care is needed during summer months. Most people noticed that their hair is dryer in the summertime. When hair is dry, it looks frizzy and brittle. It can lead to damaged hair and split ends.

Moisture is lost in the summer months. Heat and humidity cause cuticle damage that results in dry hair. Using SPF protection will help protect hair. Every person’s hair is different; however, there are four tips to protecting hair from the sun.

Tip#1: Consider Co-Washing

Co-washing is the process of using conditioner to wash the hair. This process eliminates the use of shampoos. Shampoos have stripping agents that remove natural hair oils with dirt. Also, consider shampooing less or using gentle cleaning agents. Diluting shampoos is another way to decrease dryness.

Tip#2: Limit Hair Chemicals

The summertime is when many people make bold statements. Unfortunately, it is not the time to dye hair. In fact, hair color, perms, relaxers, chemical straighteners and bleaching increase dryness. These should be avoided in the summertime. Hair products with alcohol are drying, and they should be used on an as needed basis.

Tip#3: Avoid Heat at all Cost

The summer is full of heat. Hair care enthusiasts should avoid other sources of heat. These include blow dryers, heating irons, straighteners and curlers. If it is necessary to use heat on hair a leave-in conditioner should be used. This is especially true when blow drying hair. Otherwise, people should allow their hair to air dry.

Every person’s hair generates oil at it own pace. During summer months, it is helpful to add essential oils to prevent dryness and damage. These oils can be added to hair before shampooing, as a conditioner or during styling. The following are the top oils for summer hair care.

  • Jojoba Oil- This oil is the closest to the hair’s natural oil. It provides moisture.
  • Olive Oil- This oil is a deep conditioner and moisturizer.
  • Rosemary Oil- This oil is prefect for dry scalp and dandruff.
  • Coconut Oil- Coconut oil moisturizes split ends. It replenishes damaged hair and helps flaky scalp.
  • Avocado Oil- Avocado oil is filled with nutrients. It is full of vitamins A, D, E, B6, amino acids and folic acids. Also, avocado oil is a natural SPF.
